Aquatic Therapy FAQs

  • What is Aquatic Therapy?

Aquatic therapy, also known as pool therapy or hydrotherapy, is a treatment program that is performed in chest-deep heated water. This type of exercise minimizes stress and joint inflammation, making it easy for unobstructed, painless movement of the body. Water is the source of life, and the physical properties of this most useful substance in the world are used to heal injuries, illnesses, disorders, and so much more! Warm water therapy and exercise are the new fountains of youth.

The buoyancy of the water helps support the patient's weight. Since the amount of weight-bearing in water is reduced, there is less stress on the joints and bones. Heated pool therapy is most beneficial in solving problems like arthritis, obesity, healing fractures, etc. We can exercise much easier and with more regularity in warm water without feeling overexerted and pained during workouts.

  • Aquatic Therapy Benefits
    • Cure problems like arthritis: The buoyancy, heat, hydrostatic pressure, and friction offered by water can cure problems like arthritis. The heat and buoyancy cure joint pain and help in the pain-free movement of joints. Hydrostatic pressure and water resistance build lean muscles, heal damaged tissue, and are good for building strength, endurance, and stamina.
    • Control obesity: Aquatic therapy is good for people with weight and obesity-related problems. When we exercise on land, there is underdevelopment of some muscles because resistance happens only in one direction. Resistance is better in water because we exert pressure on all muscle groups, which makes us burn about 40% more calories exercising in the pool vs. on the land. Because water exercise doesn't hurt, we can exercise longer in the water than on land.
    • Ideal for pregnant women: Pregnant women can find a lot of benefits in pool therapy, especially easing labor pain. The exercises pertaining to water therapy can provide for trouble-free delivery and quicker weight loss after birth. Since pool therapy is in the form of low-impact exercises, they do not cause any harm to the joints, knees, and ankles.
    • Fights Repetitive Stress Injuries and Autoimmune Diseases: People afflicted with stress and autoimmune disorders can benefit a lot from aquatic therapy. Water therapy that improves the circulation of oxygen, nutrients, and blood in the body and treats damaged tissue faster can build up your immunity and create a strong defense against repetitive injuries and disorders.
  • Why should I use Aquatic Therapy?

Aquatic therapy is essentially physical therapy performed in the water. This form of therapy uses the resistance of water instead of water, which renders it very simple for exercise. Certain kinds of exercise, like step-ups, squats, etc., can be done easily in water rather than on land. People who do not like exercising on land due to joint aches and pains will certainly find it much more convenient and enjoyable while moving in the water.

The advantage of aqua therapy also lies in the fact that it can enhance blood circulation to the injury, which can result in a supply of oxygen to the area and healing of impaired tissue. The flow of blood is also faster, which leads to improved tissue healing and swelling reduction.

Water provides very good resistance that is useful for treating a variety of illnesses and problems. This resistance can help strengthen muscles without using weights and impact from gravity. The water resistance and buoyancy strengthen muscle groups that can be agonizing to exercise on land. Aquatic therapy also increases our proprioception, which increases our ability to feel how our body moves in time and space while improving our balance, which helps protect us from falls, trips, and other accidents.

  • What if I am not able to swim? How can I do pool therapy?

The pool depth is only 4 ft, and we have platforms for patients to sit or stand on if needed. A trained therapist sees to it that the exercises are done under careful supervision. A non-swimmer will receive the same health benefits as a swimmer in our therapy pools. Being able to swim has no effect on an individual's ability to get the maximum effect of aquatic therapy.

  • Is Aquatic Therapy covered by insurance?

Yes, Aquatic Therapy is covered by insurance. We also have non-insurance programs that may cost less than your co-pay.

  • Who can benefit from Aquatic Therapy?

Aquatic Therapy is beneficial for anyone with an acute or chronic injury. Aquatic Therapy treats many illnesses, such as arthritis, chronic pain, gait disorders, injuries caused by accidents, sports or surgeries, back and spine issues, joint replacements, stroke and spinal cord injuries, autoimmune disorders, weight loss, and so much more. Fundamentally, for any reason that you would do land-based physical therapy, doing your therapy in the water will be much more beneficial and enjoyable.

  • What should I bring for aquatic therapy?

Bring a clean bathing suit or shorts/t-shirt, dry clothing, and a towel. There are private rooms to change and shower.

  • Warning about Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy may not be recommended for people with open wounds, contagious or infectious diseases, unmanageable seizures, or those who cannot control their bowel movements. If you have any of these conditions, you should check with your doctor before entering the therapy pool. Caretakers are welcome to help with changing clothes, showering, and entering and exiting the pool, but they do have to pay to stay in the pool if they desire.
